Liberty or Death
Liberty or Death, Freedom or Death, and Live Free or Die are slogans made famous during the independence struggle of several countries, notably including Brazil, the United States of America, Bulgaria, Greece, Catalonia, Ireland and Uruguay.
It can refer to:
- Eleftheria i thanatos, the national motto of Greece, derived from the Greek War of Independence.
- Captain Michalis, a 1953 Greek novel by Nikos Kazantzakis titled as "Freedom or Death" in the US edition and "Freedom and Death" in the UK edition.
- Liberty or Death (Bulgaria) (Свобода или смъртъ), a Bulgarian slogan used on Bulgarian revolutionary flags during and after the April Uprising of 1876.
- "Liberty or Death" (poem) (Свобода или смърт), a poem by Ivan Vazov.
- Libertad o muerte, the national motto of Uruguay.
- Live Free or Die, the state motto of New Hampshire
- "It's better to die upon your feet than to live upon your knees!" - variant of the above variously attributed to Emiliano Zapata, José Martí, Dolores Ibárruri, and Che Guevara, and sometimes traced back to Aeschylus q:Emiliano Zapata
